Werner is an accomplished writer and director with many credits that have attained international fame.

Having completed his studies in Germany, Werner has lectured both here in Australia and abroad, most notably the Australian Film, TV and Radio School, Murdoch University in WA, ABC-TV Training School in Sydney and Melbourne as well as Television New Zealand. Werner's overseas experience has taken him to Singapore where he has worked as a director, producer, consultant for the Educational Development Centre at Ngee Ann Polytechnic and Singapore Television.

Werner's credits extend to include THE EAGLE'S PATH which won the 1990 PATER Award for Best Film Script for Teenagers. Werner co-wrote and directed THE CHILDREN OF NO:67 (Die Kinder aus Nr.67), which has won 23 awards including the German Film Prize for Best First Feature and best Camera as well as the Rose of Lidici at the 22nd Film Festival at Karlovy Vary, Best Political Film at the Film International Rotterdam and Grand Prix Du Public in France as well as six other international prizes. The film was sold in 28 countries.

In 1995 Werner directed the feature film and four-part television series entitled THE FLIGHT OF THE ALBATROSS, which was a German and New Zealand co-production and has been awarded with the Crystal Bear for Best Children's Film at the 47th Berlin International Film Festival.

Werner has been a script consultant for Screen West, has co-produced and directed the documentary, DARLING RIVER KIDS, written, directed and produced for the German TV series ' Treasures of the World, Heritage of Mankind ': BIKINI ATOLL, KAKADU, FRASER ISLAND, ULURU, GREAT BARRIER REEF, TONGARIRIO, HAWAII, AUSTRALIAN CONVICT SITES and SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE.
